It’s a huge week for home entertainment with October 6 bringing to disc recent big screen releases like the Gillian Flynn adaptation Dark Places, the male stripper sequel Magic Mike XXL and David Gordon Green’s Manglehorn, starring Al Pacino. There’s also Fox Searchlight’s popular comedy drama Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, the Jemaine Clement-led indie People, Places, Things and the sci-fi tale The Anomaly, written and directed by Doctor Who’s Noel Clarke.

October 6 also sees the end of an era with the home video release of Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie Was There. Following the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Japanese animation studio has temporarily closed its film division.

Speaking of animated fare, fans looking forward to November’s The Peanuts Movie should be pleased to see a previous big screen adaptation heading, for the first time, to DVD. Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back)! delivers (sadly, in SD only) the 1980 theatrical release, available for the first time since a VHS release more than 20 years ago.

Also with a slight eye to the future is the Home Alone: 25th Anniversary Edition, which includes all five films in the Home Alone franchise inside an enormous paint bucket that will let you burglar-proof your home this holiday season. The first Home Alone (which turns 25 in November) gets a brand new Blu-ray edition along with its sequel, Lost in New York, while the Culkin-less followups offer up DVD versions.

There’s a new edition of Spartacus arriving October 6, bringing to Blu-ray the recent 4K restoration of Stanley Kubrick’s early commercial release while a more modern classic arrives in the form of My Own Private Idaho. The film, previously available on DVD only, gets a Blu-ray upgrade, courtesy of the Criterion Collection.

All of that is only half of what this week has to offer, though, as this month begins a veritable onslaught of horror fare. Kicking things off is the October 6 release of the big screen’s Insidious Chapter 3, the small screen’s Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! and, direct to home video’s own Tremors 5. Meanwhile, Abigail Breslin stars in the slasher thriller Final Girl, Casper Van Dien leads the Carrie-esque tale June, Eli Roth produces the vampire thriller The Stranger, and “Psych” star James Roday makes his directorial debut with Gravy

There’s another first time horror helmer in Ted Geoghegan, whose own terrifying We Are Still Here arrives on shelves October 6.

Then there’s a lot of great catalogue horror arriving as Kino Lorber delivers 1976’s Burnt Offerings, starring Karen Black and Oliver Reed, and Warner Home Video releases two different waves of four films each. The first, collected in The Special Effects Collection, includes monster classics The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. Mighty Joe Young, Son of Kong and Them!. The second series four are brought together as Hammer Horror Classics Vol. I, which includes Dracula Has Risen From the GraveFrankenstein Must Be DestroyedThe Mummy and Taste the Blood of Dracula. All eight films are also available separately.

Horror continues on the small screen with American Horror Story: Freak Show (the series’ fourth season), The Leftovers: Season One and Penny Dreadful: Season Two. October 6 also brings us Vikings: Season Three, South Park: Season 18 and, arriving on DVD only, the recent comedy series Happyish, starring Kathryn Hahn and Steve Coogan.

Also available October 6 is Adventure Time: The Enchiridon, featuring 16 episodes from the hit Cartoon Network series.
