The Barden Bellas are back this week as the quite rewatchable Pitch Perfect 2 arrives on a variety of formats, including as a combo back with the first film. Other recent big screen releases, meanwhile, include the romantic comedy Results, starring Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders and Kevin Corrigan, and the French biopic Saint Laurent, starring Gaspard Ulliel as the fashion designer.
The Criterion Collection has three new additions this week, including a lavish Moonrise Kingdom set and two films from Australia filmmaker Bruce Beresford: his Academy Award-nominated Breaker Morant and Mister Johnson, Beresford’s immediate followup to his Academy Award-winning Driving Miss Daisy.
Two very different film classics celebrate their 40th anniversaries the week of September 22. There’s both a new Blu-ray of Dog Day Afternoon (which now includes the 2009 feature-length documentary I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale) and, in an elaborate box set, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
To get audiences ready for their upcoming Goosebumps (in theaters October 16), Sony is offering this week the first ever Blu-rays of contemporary family hits The Indian in the Cupboard and Zathura.
Olive Films has a trio of catalogue comedies arriving September 22 with the Norm MacDonald cult comedy Dirty Work and both Mannequin and Mannequin Two: On the Move. They’re also delivering some ’70s exploitation fare with the first-ever HD releases of Black Caesar, Busting and Slaughter. They’re rounding things off with all 12 chapters of the 1950 Republic Serial The Invisible Monster.
Kino-Lorber delivers two Blu-ray debuts this week with the 1974 thriller The Destructors (starring Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn and James Mason) and John Sturges’ 1965 sci-fi tinged thriller The Satan Bug.
Scream Factory continues their impressive commitment to horror with a features-packed Blu-ray of Michael Winner’s supernatural tale of terror The Sentinel.
On the small screen front, September 22 brings us Arrow: Season Three, The Flash: Season One and a 3D edition of Doctor Who‘s Series Eight finale two-parter Dark Water and Death in Heaven. Arriving on DVD only is the first season of the recent FOX hit, The Last Man on Earth, season two of Jason Momoa’s SundanceTV series The Red Road and the long-awaited King of the Hill: Season 12.
On the Digital HD front, September 22 offers the inspirational documentaries Batkid Begins and A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story, as well as Magic Mike XXL, San Andreas and the indie sci-fi release The Anomaly.
