In May Tom Hardy The Hollywood Reporter.
The project is deep in development at New Line, which has taken control of DC’s Vertigo imprint from parent company Warner Bros., and while the plot is being kept under wraps a script has already been completed by Chris Borrelli (The Vatican Tapes). An adaptation of a crime saga written and illustrated by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso that intertwines the noir and pulp genres, the project is said to adhere closely to the source material, which centers on an enigmatic man who presents different people with a gun, the identity of the person who ruined their lives and one hundred rounds of untraceable ammunition. As Hardy stated in May about the then-mystery project:
It’s really good actually, it contains elements of all kinds of stuff. From Ocean’s Eleven, to Batman, you can get all the wrappers out and it would be a big, really cool, Technicolor, Pulp Fiction… It’s a psychological fuckfest, it’s absolutely awesome. It’s as if you would take “Transmetropolitan” and make it happen, but it’s not that out there it’s something which is much more real world. It could be like Heat, it could be fucking awesome.
After reading the Wikipedia page for the comic book property, a film adaptation of 100 Bullets sounds as if it would be great in the hands of someone with a lot of visual style and ambition — say, Quentin Tarantino, or Guy Ritchie, or Zack Snyder, or the Wachowskis. I’m not saying any of those directors will attach themselves to the project, as Tarantino definitely won’t and I don’t think the others will either, but someone like any of those directors could work wonders here, assuming the script is as solid as the underlying premise.
In all 100 Bullets sounds interesting, and reading Hardy’s quote again makes it obvious to me that he desperately wants to see this thing through. The version of the movie I see in my head looks a bit like Sin City, which I really enjoy, so hopefully New Line is able to make something worthwhile out of this. In other words, it’s probably a good thing Zack Snyder’s plate is full through 2019 with Justice League Part One and Part Two.
