Watch: Early ‘Shrek’ Story Reels Feature Chris Farley’s Voice Work

I don’t think I’m the first to suggest the world lost a great comedian far too soon when Chris Farley passed away in 1997, but the world lost a great comedian far too soon when Chris Farley passed away in 1997. Farley’s ability for physical comedy was tremendous and his timing impeccable, things I’m reminded of any time I see him in old episodes of “Saturday Night Live” or whenever I catch Tommy Boy on cable.

I was reminded of something else about Farley today when Collider posted a story about the late actor, namely that he lent his voice to the titular ogre in Shrek before his passing. Mike Myers ultimately took over the role and took the character in a very different direction, but a video of an early story reel from the film has found its way online today featuring Farley as Shrek and Eddie Murphy as Donkey in a series of rough sketches from the movie’s campfire scene.

It’s interesting to see how different actors approach the same character from different perspectives, especially when it comes to voice work, and the video serves as a rare glimpse at Farley’s work on the project before his death. Check it out below.
