2015 Summer Movie Preview: 20 Most Anticipated Movies

Dope

June 19

Again, I know I have something of an anti-Sundancey-film-vibe bias and Dope is carrying a little of that, but at the same time it looks like it’s working with some electricity. It seems to have a vibe and a pulse I can bounce to and is also steeped in some ’90s hip hop, which never hurts. Buzz out of Sundance was hot for this one and the fact it landed at Open Road is another positive in my book as Open Road and fellow small studios such as A24 are churning out some of the best movies over the last couple of years.

Directed by Rick Famuyiwa

Starring: Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Blake Anderson, Zoe Kravitz, A$AP Rocky, Forest Whitaker and Keith Stanfield

Mission: Impossible

Rogue Nation

July 31

What? Tom Cruise is in a new movie? Sure, I’ll go. What? It’s a new Mission: Impossible movie? I’m already there. Cruise sets out to deliver and already the big talking point surrounding Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is the high-flying stunt he did hanging off the side of an airplane during take off and landing. Forget the fact it sounds like the plot of this one is rehashing the previous films, I’m still in.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie

Starring: Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris and Simon McBurney

Mad Max: Fury Road

May 15

If you’ve seen any trailers for this movie you’re either in or you’re out. Mad Max: Fury Road looks absolutely insane and I cannot wait to get my first look. If it even comes close to living up to expectations it will make my top ten of 2015 and it appears that will be a matter of opinion that people either get or adamantly disagree. I’m not even sure there’s any measure of reasoning to explain to someone why you’re looking forward to this one if they don’t get it on their own watching the trailer. This may be a $150 million-budgeted cult film in the making and I am hoping I’m part of that cult.

Directed by George Miller

Starring: Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Megan Gale and Abbey Lee
