I am very curious as to how the marketing for The Last 5 Years is working for people. As someone who loves the show and this film adaptation (read my review here), I think they are doing a good job of selling the stuff that will get people to buy tickets, even if it is a bit of a misrepresentation of the what the film is. The latest piece of marketing is a new poster, which you can see below.
I do like the mosaic approach to the poster. It illustrates the fragmented nature of the story, although whether people know that or not when they see it is something I am unaware of. I know it is difficult to illustrate the two different timelines on a poster, but I think this is a worthy substitute. I do find it a little weird that they choose only smily, happy moments in the relationship to show, when there is just as much (if not more) of negative stuff. The mosaic allows you to show many different facets, but they went with the easier selling stuff.
The film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan is slated to open in limited release February 13, 2015, just in time for Valentine’s Day. I know couples like to see romance movies on that day, but this relationship is destructive, so maybe a romantic date night with this is not the best decision. Though, it is still a great movie, and everyone should see it.
Again, you can see the new poster below, along with the UK trailer for the film.
An adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed musical, The Last 5 Years is a musical chronicling a love affair and marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie Wellerstein (Jordan) is a young, talented up and coming novelist who falls in love with Cathy Hiatt (Kendrick), a struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through song. All of Cathy’s songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair, while Jamie’s songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. They meet in the center when Jamie proposes.
