It’s that time of year as publicists seem to be bombarding my Inbox with “When are you posting your top ten?” emails. As of now I’m hoping for next Tuesday or Wednesday, but I still have a lot to go through before finalizing the list.
A couple nights ago I rewatched Nightcrawler as it’s a film that really hasn’t left me since first seeing it, continuing to rise in the ranks as I found even more to appreciate about it the second time around.
Then last night I rewatched Gone Girl for the first time since seeing it in theaters and wow, what a movie to watch while at home just sitting on the couch. Watching a movie you’ve already seen at home is never the same as seeing it in the theater, but with Gone Girl it’s not just that passive experience of putting the movie on, letting it play and paying attention to 80-90% of it while you monitor your email, check Twitter and catch up on RSS feeds. Yes, I still did all that, but in the background this darkness looms. You can’t help be drawn back into the movie, whether it’s through the score or the dialogue, you’re just continually drawn in. And wow, Rosamund Pike is even better the second time around,
[amz asin=”B00OMC0W9G” size=”small”]I ended the night last night with Fury… well, about an hour of it before I called it a night and hit the sack. I’m going to finish the other half tonight, but I really, really like this movie, if only for the absolute intensity of it. Well, that and the performances all around. I really think everyone delivered in this movie.
I may be able to see Mommy a second time tomorrow and there are still a few others I’d like to watch before making my top ten. I really wish Fox Searchlight had sent out screeners of The Drop, which is a movie that was overlooked by far too many and contains one of two tremendous performances from Tom Hardy this year. My wife and I are also talking about seeing either Beyond the Lights or Dear White People this weekend, though holiday plans are already cramping my style so it may be tough to actually get away to see one…
