What I Watched, What You Watched #275

It was a week of a lot of movies as Paramount rushed to get BFCA members to see three of their end of year films ahead of the Critics Choice nominations deadline and I did my best to catch up on as many screeners as I possibly could before casting my nominations. This mean seeing The Gambler, Top Five and Selma from the Paramount slate, but it didn’t end there.

At home I watched foreign language favorite Ida as well as Two Days, One Night, the film that just might get Marion Cotillard and Oscar nomination. Then there was Into the Woods and Still Alice as well as a second time watching Nightcrawler, which I found an even greater appreciation for the second time.

Next week I can see Mommy for a second time should it fit my schedule, otherwise my only screening in theaters will be The Interview, which I’ve actually seen getting some good reviews so far, but that’s a little surprising considering they aren’t screening it for press here in Seattle until 8 PM the night before it hits theaters… In fact, it probably will have 10 PM screenings the night before, which means I’ll probably be seeing it only minutes before the first public audience does. Typically such a scenario is reserved for movies the studio isn’t exactly expecting good reviews for… we’ll see.

EDIT: I mistakenly said The Interview was screening the night before release in Seattle, when in fact it’s screening almost a week before release. Oops.

I also expect next week will be spent revisiting more films I loved throughout the year and I still want to watch Cake (the 141-minute run time is daunting though), The Homesman, Belle and, in an ideal world, I would find time to head to the theater to see Dear White People and Beyond the Lights. Unfortunately, there’s only so much time and a life outside of movies must sometimes be lived.
