Roberto Orci Won’t Direct ‘Star Trek 3’, Edgar Wright on Short List to Replace Him

Roberto Orci never seemed like a good choice to take over the Star Trek franchise from J.J. Abrams, for no other reason than the fact it seemed like too big a project to serve as a feature directorial debut. There are no specific details, but I have to assume someone at Paramount agrees or perhaps even Orci agrees as Deadline reports he has exited the Star Trek 3 director’s chair, though he will stay on to produce.

As of now, the only name listed as a possible replacement is Edgar Wright, who supposedly directed a single shot in Star Trek into Darknes.

Orci and Patrick McKay wrote the current draft of the screenplay, but it’s far too early to tell if that script will remain and considering Paramount hasn’t yet set a release date for Star Trek 3 this could end up being a very long process.
