I’ll be seeing Ava DuVernary‘s Selma next week as one of the final films of 2014 I need to see before casting my Critics Choice Awards nomination ballot and it’s one I’m looking forward to, particularly due to DuVernay, whom I was introduced to after seeing Middle of Nowhere, which I learned today is finally going to arrive on DVD on January 13, this after hitting theaters back in 2012.
As for Selma, the buzz is high and it just might be the film we need right now as it tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s (David Oyelowo) historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people – a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Oyelowo is getting a lot of praise for his performance and from what I hear it’s a film that serves as a real crowdpleaser and overall powerful piece of cinema.
The pic hits theaters on December 25, but today we have the new John Legend track titled “Glory“, which Legend co-wrote with Common. Check it out below.
