I did not care much for this year’s reboot of Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards. This, though, mainly had to do with the human characters in the film, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, and others, who I could not care less about. The thing I cannot fault the film on is when the titular character is on screen. Godzilla looks terrific. He has a size and weight we have never seen and felt before, and the results pay off splendidly.
Below is an effects reel from the film, which I am sure is aiming for that Visual Effects Academy Award nomination, for you all to watch. I do not know a lot about visual effects. I know there are layers, but that’s really about it. This featurette shows you some of the steps to making that giant lizard come to life.
A film I did enjoy, on the other hand, was Bryan Singer‘s return to the world of mutants with X-Men: Days of Future Past. The big standout for visual effects with this film was, of course, the prison breakout scene with Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters. The scene was inventive, fun, exciting, and other positive adjectives. It is rightly the focal point of the film’s Oscar campaign for the category, and below you can watch not one, not two, but THREE featurettes on how that scene came to be. Enjoy!
