It kind of makes me sad that Joe and Anthony Russo are now elbow deep in the Marvel machine. If you watch their directorial stuff on “Community“, you know they are capable of tackling many different styles, genres, and tones. Their first step into the Marvel world, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, was terribly bland. I cannot blame the Russos for that. They tried to add flair, but I was just very bored through most of it. Well, it made over $700 million worldwide and was a critical success, so Marvel is sure to keep them around.
They are already directing the third film in the series, Captain America: Civil War, which just cast Daniel Brühl as its villain, and Deadline is reporting they are rumored to be taking the reigns of the Avengers series from Joss Whedon for Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Part 2. That last film is set to be released May 3, 2019 (mark your calendars!), so the Russos will be in this for the long haul. I hope they will have time to do other, more interesting things, but if they want that Marvel money, I don’t blame them for taking it.
In related news, they are set to direct the season six premiere of “Community”, which will debut on its new platform, Yahoo! Screen, in early 2015. Quite frankly, I am looking forward more to that than I am about the giant two-part Avengers film.
