I am fairly certain at this point Sony just has a bunch of mallards walking across keyboards at their office, randomly selecting Spider-Man properties. This is particularly true today, as Latino Review is reporting they are working on an Aunt May spinoff film without Spider-Man. No, you are not reading that incorrectly. An Aunt May movie. I hear you asking, “Why?” I can only respond with, “Because it’s there.”
Sony is trying everything they can to make sure the Marvel superhero is still a viable entity, despite the vastly underperforming, both critically and financially, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With The Sinister Six coming to a female led Spider-Man spinoff to a Venom movie to two planned Amazing Spider-Man sequels, Sony is putting all of its eggs into the Spider-Man basket, which has a growing hole in the bottom of it. So why not throw in an Aunt May movie about her before Peter Parker was in the picture? Why the hell not?
At this point, is there anyone out there who saw the most recent Amazing Spider-Man and cannot wait to see what else Sony has to offer with this character? Personally, I could not care less what happens. I know Sony wants to make money, and it is clear that is all they are focused on. Movies need at least a little creativity. Just a tiny bit.
