Here is some news that should surprise no one. David O. Russell has built himself quite the ensemble over the past couple of years, and he wants to reteam with them again. Russell, in an interview with Go (via The Playlist), revealed that for his next film Joy, which already has Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle alum Jennifer Lawrence attached, would also like to add Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper to the mix.
I think I’d very much like (Robert) De Niro to be in it, I think he’s gonna be in it. And of course I always create a role for Bradley Cooper. I try to have things people have never done. Then they can get excited, and it’s exciting for audiences. That’s what makes it daring in some way.
I know there are people who will complain about this sort of stuff, saying he is just making the same thing over and over again. Just because you use the same ensemble does not mean you are making the same film. The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle are all wildly different films, despite using some of the same players. I do not see how a film about Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop, will just be doing the same thing again. I actually like it when a filmmaker cobbles together a troupe of actors he or she uses and reuses, making me see them in different ways under the same creative eye. Typically, there is a talent reason they choose to work with one another time and again.
I think Russell has been making some excellent work lately. Yes, that does include American Hustle, in my opinion. So, I am game for whatever he wants to do next, and if it includes, Lawrence, De Niro, and Cooper, all the better.
As for Joy, here’s the plot:
The story follows the life story of Joy Mangano (Lawrence), a struggling Long Island single mom of three who became one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs with her self-wringing Miracle Mop invention.
