The Into the Woods publicity campaign is in full force now, with the December 25th release just under two months away. Today, Disney has released ten new character posters for the film, which you can see below. They include James Corden‘s Baker, Emily Blunt as his wife, Meryl Streep as the Witch, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, and more.
Today is a very important day in the history of Into the Woods because on this day in 1987, the original Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine show opened. That cast included Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Chip Zien as the Baker, Joanna Gleason as his wife (who won a Tony for her performance), Kim Crosby as Cinderella, and Robert Westenberg as the Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince. Having been born after it opened, I unfortunately never got the chance to see it live. Thankfully, it lives on with the original cast album and a filmed version, which is available on DVD and will be getting a Blu-ray release on December 2nd. If you have not, I highly recommend picking those up. They are a big part of my life.
Now, back to the movie. Despite all my reservations, of which there are many about this adaptation, I am still thoroughly excited to see how it translates on screen. Lapine working on the screenplay certainly helps my anticipation. The new posters, which this article is about, can be seen below. The Streep one is just an alteration to the poster we have seen before, but the others are all new.
