As seems to always be the case nowadays before a franchise (or possible franchise) feature hits the theaters, talk of another sequel bubbles to the surface. Because it’s not enough to be interested in the movie we haven’t seen yet, it’s more exciting to be interested in the movie that hasn’t even been greenlit yet.
Speaking with Variety, Dumb and Dumber To co-director Peter Farrelly told the trade, “Depending how this does, I could see doing another. I just really enjoy this movie and working with those guys. Yeah, I could see doing it again.”
Obviously, depending on how this does, and from what I can tell based on reactions to the marketing there seems to mainly be two sides to the pre-release audience for the sequel, those that want to see it and those that despise its very existence. Personally, I love Dumb and Dumber and am mainly curious to see if they can capture lightning in a bottle once again.
While I haven’t watched a full trailer, based on what I have seen the only thing I notice is the very “sitcom-y” look to the film, and it’s perhaps one of the only times I’ve really felt such a jarring disparity in appearance from one film to the next. Obviously such an observation has nothing to do with the overall quality of the film, but was a recent example where I noticed the glaring difference between shooting a movie on film vs. digital. I don’t know, just an observation.
Co-star Jeff Daniels also weighed in on whether a third was in the cards saying, “I love the Farrellys, I love [Jim Carrey]… There’s great value in making people laugh 20 years ago and I hope now. And [if] you get to do it again, you get to do it again.” Not exactly a big box of confidence from either quote, saying pretty much the obvious, but I guess the fact they are open to it is… something?
One thing you can count on is a series of “postcredits gags about future sequels”, presumably very much in the same vein as what we saw following 22 Jump Street (see here).
Dumb and Dumber To hits theaters on November 14.
