Jason Reitman‘s film career has taken a bit of a dip as of late with the lackluster success of Labor Day and the outright bomb that is Men, Women & Children, of which he’s spent the majority of the film’s promotional tour shouting, “It’s not about the Internet!” So, what’s next? Well, first off will be a stop at Hulu where the digital streaming service has announced a straight to series order for “Casual“, a ten episode, single-camera, half-hour comedy series that follows the story of a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother and his newly divorced sister. Together, they coach each other through the crazy world of dating (on-line and off), while living under one roof again and raising a teenager.
Reitman will executive produce and direct the premiere episode, along with writer Zander Lehmann and Reitman’s production partner Helen Estabrook (Whiplash, Young Adult).
Now if this was 10-15 years ago this might look like a premature end for Reitman, but filmmakers have been making the leap to television for quite some time now and this is probably just a bit of a palette cleanser for Reitman as he’s already at work adapting Kaui Hart Hemmings‘ “The Possibilities“, which may end up his next feature.
“Casual” will debut on Hulu in 2015.
