David Ayer‘s Fury got off to a nice start on Thursday night to the tune of $1.2 million from late night showings in 2,489 theaters. Right now it looks like the combination of Laremy’s $28.8 million prediction and the reader average of $30.9 million may be the range we’re looking at. Though, the $68 million budgeted film may actually be able to push north of that reader prediction should word of mouth hold strong over the weekend.
Fox’s animated entry this weekend, The Book of Life from producer Guillermo del Toro kicked the weekend off with $300,000 last night from 2,150 theaters. The readers and Laremy are both expecting about $15.5 million for this one, which is less than The BoxTrolls opened with a month ago and probably a safe prediction at this point still.
Also opening this weekend is the new Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Best of Me and I’m more inclined to go with the reader average at $16.6 million than Laremy’s $18.2 million if only because I don’t think James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan bring in the audience on par with previous leads for Sparks adaptations.
Finally, I’m afraid Laremy led many of you astray with his $6.5 million number for the Men, Women and Children expansion this weekend. For starters, the film has been doing terrible in limited release and now, as it expands into 608 theaters, I’m not expecting anything over $1.7 million and I think that might even be too high. The reader average was $4.4 million, but it looks like 12 of our 70+ predictors went below $1.5 million, the lowest being a miniscule $0.23 million. That’s a little too low, but still, going to be closer than that $6.5 million call.
