8 Character Posters for ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ Stare You Down

Over the last several days Warner Bros. has been releasing a series of character posters promoting the December 17 release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the final film in Peter Jackson‘s Hobbit trilogy, which has basically become a punchline for everyone as of late. Hell, there was even a joke about it during the puppet sketch on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.

The studio has dubbed this the “defining chapter” in the overlong franchise and who knows, maybe some redemption can still be found after the hours spent with Bilbo and the gang over the course of the Unexpected Journey and the Desolation of Smaug. I’m not expecting much, but perhaps those lowered expectations are exactly what this franchise needs.

As for these posters, you get a look at Bard (Luke Evans), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Thorn (Richard Armitage), Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), Thranduil (Lee Pace) and, of course, Bilbo (Martin Freeman).

Check out all eight new posters below.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.

As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.
