At this point, I do not see how another Ghostbusters could be good in any way. The series already has a sequel which is not good, and that film featured the entire creative team that created the original, brilliant first film. Ghostbusters is a blip of magic we should all treasure, put on a pedestal, and not mess with anymore. However, Sony cannot leave well enough alone, so we will be getting a new one regardless if anyone wants it. The talk for a long time is that we will be getting another sequel, but now that Ivan Reitman has departed the project and Harold Ramis has departed this consciousness, news is we will be getting a reboot of the franchise, directed by Paul Feig.
Feig, director of Bridesmaids and The Heat, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, talked about his plans to reboot the franchise with an all female cast, which should surprise no one after his female-lead critical and commercial hits. He has enlisted Katie Dippold, writer for The Heat, to pen the screenplay. His reasoning for wanting to go the reboot route rather than a sequel is that he “loves origin stories.”
I love origin stories. That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?
Do we really need another origin story? In the big budget blockbuster realm, I have certainly suffered origin story fatigue. We all know where the story is going, so just start there. They are “Ghostbusters,” so let them bust ghosts from the start. We already had an origin story for this concept, and it was done perfectly. We do not need it again.
The “hilarious women” cast that Feig promises has not been announced, but I think we can assume at least Melissa McCarthy will be featured, having worked with Feig on his last three films (including the upcoming Spy). Even if the cast turns out to be a collection of really talented performers, is there anyone out there who wants to see this movie? Do you just wish, like I do, that this property would be left alone?

It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call.
