In a surprising turn, Edgar Wright has dropped out of directing Marvel’s Ant-Man, a surprising turn of events considering the film was greenlit based on his pitch and the principal cast was, more or less, entirely in place.
The news came from Marvel with the following announcement:
Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.
According to Variety a replacement director has already been, just not announced.
If this doesn’t get you on July 2012. So what exactly has changed about his vision?
Wright always seemed like an odd choice for the Marvel universe since he has such a distinctive style and approach. It surprises me he would leave the project, but not as much as it surprised me Marvel would agree to have him direct.
The cast, as it stands right now, includes Michael Douglas, Paul Rudd, Michael Peña, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, Corey Stoll and Matt Gerald. Will they all remain following this news? We’ll see.
Here’s the plot:
Biochemist Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) uses his latest discovery, a group of subatomic particles, to create a size-altering formula. Though his first self-test goes awry, he develops an instrument that helps him communicate with and control insects.
