It appears Cate Blanchett has replaced Emma Thompson as the female narrator opposite Brad Pitt for Terrence Malick‘s Voyage of Time, his epoch-spanning look at the history of humanity from the Big Bang until to today. Wild Bunch will screen five minutes of the film in Cannes and it’s expected to hit theaters in 2016. [Screen Daily]
Michel Hazanavicius is at Cannes with his latest film, The Search, but he is already lining up another project with Zach Galifianakis already attached and Paul Rudd in talks to play the title role in Will. The two actors have been attached to the comedy since it was first announced almost two years ago. The story centers on the eponymous protagonist (Rudd) who lives in a world devoid of free will where every action is written by angelic scribes. Then, one day, Will’s writer (Galifianakis) quits, leaving Will to do anything he wants. The film will follow In the Garden of Beasts for Universal starring Tom Hanks adapted from Erik Larson’s nonfiction book. [Variety]
Naomi Watts is set to join Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe in Gus van Sant‘s Sea of Trees centering on an American man (McConaughey) who takes a journey into the infamous “Suicide Forest” at the foothills of Mount Fuji with the intention of taking his own life. When he is interrupted by a Japanese man (Watanabe) who has had second thoughts about his own suicide, and is trying to find his way out of the forest, the two begin a journey of reflection and survival. Watts would play the wife of McConaughey’s character, her portion of the story being told in flashback. Chris Sparling (Buried) penned the screenplay. [THR]
Finally, while it is fully expected Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Inherent Vice will play fall film festivals leading up to its December 12 release, that will only be a limited release as it is now being reported Warner Bros. will take the film nationwide on January 9, 2015. This isn’t a surprise, but at least you can now make plans for that weekend, that is unless you were really looking forward to also seeing Taken 3 that weekend, in which case you may have to plan a double feature.
