Jai Courtney to Lead ‘Terminator: Genesis’

I’m sorry, but I just see this as a “ho-hum” move as Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard) has been cast as Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genesis, the fifth film in the Terminator franchise and what is being looked at as the hopeful first film in a new trilogy.

Courtney joins Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”) as Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film with Thor: The Dark World helmer, Alan Taylor, directing. Plan is for a July 1, 2015 release and the franchise actually took a little bit of a blow recently as Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures as bailed out and will no longer take part in funding the picture, though Ellison has decided to retain an executive producer credit.

Ellison, whose Annapurna has been behind recent films such as Zero Dark Thirty, Her, The Master and Killing Them Softly, was one of the reasons I was holding out hope for the film, but now it’s beginning to feel like just another vanilla, studio franchise starter and, in my opinion, we have enough of those for now.

There aren’t any plot details so far, but, as Reese, Courtney is playing the same character Michael Biehn played in James Cameron‘s original. [Variety]
