Shirley Temple Has Died at Age 85

Unless I’m forgetting something, I don’t believe I ever saw a single movie featuring Shirley Temple, yet the one-time child star had a face I would recognize immediately. Despite my unfamiliarity with her work, to learn she passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the age of 85 is still sad news.

Temple (known as Shirley Temple Black in her private life) died of natural causes according to her publicist in a prepared statement, which also added that she died surrounded by her family and caregivers at her home in Woodside, California.

Temple starred in 14 short films, 43 feature films and over 25 storybook movies in a career that spanned from 1931 until 1961. She was the recipient of an Juvenile Award Oscar at the 1935 Academy Awards and recently given a Life Achievement Award at the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

There is little else I can add since I’m not familiar with her work, so I’ll just offer the following clip from The Little Princess (1939), one of the more popular films she starred in.
