Emmanuel Lubezki Wins 2014 ASC Award for ‘Gravity’

I’m not sure there is anyone out there that doesn’t expect Emmanuel Lubezki to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography at the Oscars for his work on Gravity, but I think it was fair to debate whether he would win with the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) who’ve been known to zig on occasion while the Academy goes with the more “obvious” choice. Tonight, however, the ASC fell in line with the general assumption naming Lubezki the winner at tonight’s 2014 ASC Awards, his third win from the ASC and his second while working with director Alfonso Cuaron.

Lubezki previously won for Children of Men and after that for his work on Terrence Malick‘s Tree of Life. This year he bested a stacked field of seven nominees, seven due to a three-way tie in the voting.

The win marked the first time the ASC handed their top prize to a 3D feature.

I have included the list of nominees directly below and updated the Oscar Overture with the win for Gravity.

  • Sean Bobbitt, BSC (12 Years a Slave)
  • Barry Ackroyd, BSC (Captain Phillips)
  • Philippe Le Sourd (The Grandmaster)
  • Emmanuel Lubezki, ASC, AMC (Gravity)
  • Bruno Delbonnel, ASC, AFC (Inside Llewyn Davis)
  • Phedon Papamichael, ASC (Nebraska)
  • Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC (Prisoners)
