The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) have announced their 2014 ASC Award nominees and instead of the standard five nominees, this year they are going with seven. You know, because in this day and age everyone is a winner, just ask the Los Angeles Film Critics.
Among the nominees are the obvious contenders such as Roger Deakins (Prisoners), Sean Bobbitt (12 Years a Slave), Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity) and Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davis). And it’s no surprise Barry Ackroyd (Captain Phillips) and Phedon Papamichael (Nebraska) would be strong contenders.
Most interesting to see is Philippe Le Sourd for his work on Kar Wai Wong‘s The Grandmaster. Not because I haven’t yet seen it or because the cinematography doesn’t look especially beautiful, but because it’s a film that doesn’t simply seem to be one everyone is talking about. It’s great to see something unexpected get a little notoriety.
As for why we have seven nominees instead of five, it’s due to a three-way tie in the voting. You know, because it’s sorta hard breaking ties. You have to vote again and it’s this whole process.
All said, the winner will be announced on February 1, the list of nominees is directly below.
