It’s great to know Adam Sandler has a new film coming up that doesn’t rely on adults acting like juveniles or forces him to dress up in women’s clothing as he will play a lonely New York shoe repairman in Thomas McCarthy‘s The Cobbler.
McCarthy, who is best known for films such as The Station Agent, The Visitor and Win Win, co-wrote the film with Paul Sado, which centers on Sandler’s character who starts to sense he’s let life pass him by — going nowhere while fixing the shoes of more-assertive customers taking vacations and living adventures. Things change, though, when he discovers a family heirloom that magically lets him “walk in another man’s shoes” and see the world differently.
While Sandler is most often associated with his stupid comedies it’s films such as Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me that show there is more to him than baby talk and fart jokes. Given this is a collaboration with McCarthy and the strong supporting including Dustin Hoffman, Method Man, Steve Buscemi, Melonie Diaz and Ellen Barkin.
As of now the film doesn’t have a domestic distributor, but I have to assume that will change shortly and I would bet Fox Searchlight will be the one snatching it up. Just a guess.
