During the November 26 taping of “The Tonight Show“, Jay Leno had Quentin Tarantino on as a guest and he revealed his next film (to be titled The Hateful Eight) will be a Western. “I can’t talk that much about it,” he told Leno, “but I will say one thing — I haven’t told anybody, but I will say the genre — it’s a Western.”
Of course, this is where the speculation now comes in and Tarantino is quick to say, “It’s not a Django Unchained sequel, but it’s another Western and the thing is I had so much fun doing Django, and I love Westerns so much that, after I taught myself how to make one, it’s like ‘Well now let me make another one now that I know what I’m doing.”
Over at HitFix, Drew McWeeney offers up some possibilities on what the film could be, beginning with a film focused on abolitionist John Brown who unsuccessfully tried to cause an armed slave revolt in 1859. Tarantino talked of the project back in 2009 telling Charlie Rose:
“One story that I could be interested in doing, and it would probably be one of the last movies I do. My favorite hero in American history is John Brown. He’s my favorite American who ever lived… He basically single-handedly started the road to end slavery and the fact that he killed people to do it. He decided, ‘Okay, if we start spilling white blood, then they’re going to start getting the idea.'”
[amz asin=”0062289497″ size=”small”]McWeeney references a possible Australian-set feature that would take place in the Outback and then there’s the possible adaptation of Elmore Leonard‘s 1972 novel “Forty Lashes Less One,” centering on two men facing life sentences — Harold Jackson, the only black man behind the walls, and Raymond San Carlos, an Apache — given a chance at freedom if they track down and hunt Arizona’s five most wanted outlaws. Sounds like a Tarantino project if I’ve ever heard one.
