New ‘American Hustle’ Clip and TV Spots, Plus Updated and New Oscar Predictions

So, American Hustle had its coming out party for select journalists over the weekend and while reviews are embargoed, brief commentary was allowed and pretty much everyone that had something to say had something to say about Jennifer Lawrence.

For the longest time it has been a two woman race for Best Supporting Actress between Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) and Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), but now it seems Lawrence is destined to crash that party. Given the serious nature of both The Butler and 12 Years a Slave it’s entirely possible Oscar voters looking to award something a little lighter would lean toward Lawrence, but as of now she has only risen as high as #3 on my just updated Supporting charts.

Here is my current nomination ranking and you can find my ranking of all 22 contenders right here:

  1. Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
  2. Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler)
  3. Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
  4. June Squibb (Nebraska)
  5. Julia Roberts (August: Osage County)

I’ve also updated my Best Supporting Actor charts, moving Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) into the top five as it’s a category that’s getting increasingly crowded. At the moment I’m sticking with Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) at #1 followed by Tom Hanks (Saving Mr. Banks) as I’m still not sure Michael Fassbender‘s incarnation of evil in 12 Years a Slave is going to be the player many believe it will be, though he still makes my top five, which is rounded out by Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips.

I should say right now, however, even Leto at #1 is hardly placed there with the utmost of confidence and if you click over and check out the rest of the field there are several names looking to climb over that bubble line.

This morning I also opened the door to my first batch of predictions in the Best Production Design and Best Makeup & Hairstyling categories and more below-the-line categories will be opening soon.

For now, when it comes to Best Picture and Best Director, I’m sticking with American Hustle even though early word is it’s a definite nominee, but it doesn’t seem like a winner. I’m seeing it in less than a week so I figured I’d hold off until then to make any changes to those two categories.

Otherwise, check out a new clip from American Hustle and two new TV spots, all of which highlighting, you guessed it, Jennifer Lawrence.
