Just like The Hunger Games before it, Lionsgate overestimated the final earnings form The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by $3.1 million as it ended the three-day weekend with $158 million, which is still enough for the all-time November opening weekend record, but not only is it not enough to best The Dark Knight Rises for the highest 2D opener ever, it’s also behind The Dark Knight as it’s the third highest opening for a 2D movie, not adjusted for inflation.
The weekend’s other new wide release, Vince Vaughn‘s Delivery Man, fell $300,000 from estimates, finishing the weekend at $7.9 million, not exactly an impressive result.
Thor: The Dark World continues to plummet as it dropped another 61.2% for a $14.1 million weekend and in its second weekend The Best Man Holiday finished right around estimates at $12.4 million, which was actually a much larger drop than would have expected given the film’s “A+” CinemaScore on opening weekend.
