Scarlett Johansson Wins In Rome for ‘Her’ Voice Alone

Over the weekend the Rome Film Festival handed out its awards and the most notable among them was for Scarlett Johansson winning Best Actress for her voice work in Spike Jonze‘s Her. In the film Johansson is the voice of an advanced operating system, allowing her to befriend a heartbroken man (Joaquin Phoenix) who has just ended a long relationship. Soon that friendship grows into something more and, as the film’s synopsis says, it’s a feature that puts on display the “risks of intimacy in the modern world.”

Coming out of the New York Film Festival there was a bit of a buzz concerning the possibility of an Oscar nomination for Johansson who never appears in the film, only her voice. Of course, the likelihood of such a thing happening is pretty slim, though I do include Johansson on my list of Best Supporting Actress predictions.

The question now, I guess, is who else will recognize her work? SAG? Golden Globes? A few critics groups?

I have yet to see the film, but I have seen the film’s trailer and it immediately became a must watch in my opinion. Her hits limited theaters on December 18 and I’ll be seeing it quite soon enough as voting for the Critics’ Choice Awards is just around the corner and I really can’t wait.
