First ‘Maleficent’ Poster Features a Horned Angelina Jolie

Disney has revealed the first poster for Maleficent, their upcoming deconstruction of the “Sleeping Beauty” fairy tale told from the perspective of the princess’ evil nemesis, Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie. Tomorrow morning at 9 AM PST the first trailer for the film will be released online.

Directed by Robert Stromberg (reportedly with Jon Lee Hancock coming in to film some reshoots) the film begins with the beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent, who has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal — an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone.

Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora (Elle Fanning). As the child grows, Maleficent realizes Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom — and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Maleficent will hit theaters on May 30 and co-stars Miranda Richardson, Imelda Staunton, Kenneth Cranham, Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley, Lesley Manville and Brenton Thwaites.
