I’m a little surprised how quickly I’ve soured on the new Star Trek franchise. I really enjoyed J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 reboot, but Star Trek Into Darkness was such a disappointment I’m beginning to think my C- review was too kind. Now, Hollywood is up to their old tricks as they search for an Abrams replacement for Star Trek 3.
Abrams is busy co-writing and preparing to direct Star Wars: Episode VII for Disney and so a new face will take over for the third Trek feature and according to Deadline, Paramount’s first choice is Attack the Block director Joe Cornish. Cornish also co-wrote Steven Spielberg‘s The Adventures Of Tintin and Edgar Wright‘s upcoming Marvel installment, Ant-Man.
Cornish being a top contender is no surprise as Hollywood has already taken the likes of Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) after they enjoyed some impressive independent success and shuttled them to The Amazing Spider-Man and Jurassic World respectively, which is to say, since they’re debuts neither have made anything worthy of our attention.
Cornish was once on the shortlist to direct A Good Day to Die Hard, but thankfully didn’t take that gig. Star Trek 3 certainly would seem up his alley given Attack the Block‘s sense of humor and sci-fi trappings, but the new Trek franchise has already lost most of its luster and seems like something without enough opportunity to raise Cornish’s profile and therefore not a gig that would seem to be worth it.
It is worth noting, Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) was once also rumored for the Trek 3 gig. The film is expected to begin shooting in 2014.
