Friday Box Office: ‘Gravity’ Targeting $40 Million Second Weekend

Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity will crack the $100 million mark today, only nine days after release, after bringing in an estimated $12.7 million on Friday, on its way to what may end up being a $40 million second weekend. Obviously this means a second weekend at #1, but that isn’t to say Captain Phillips had a poor showing.

The Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks real life thriller brought in an estimated $8.5 million on Friday and may end up around $24 million for the weekend and I expect with the “A” CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences it’s going to have some impressive legs.

Not so impressive was the $1.4 million opening day for Machete Kills and I don’t expect things to improve over the weekend. It’s not as if audiences were entirely hateful of the film, but the “B-” CinemaScore is hardly a ringing endorsement.

I will be back on Sunday morning with a complete look at the weekend, but the top ten Friday estimates are directly below via Box Office Mojo.

  1. Gravity – $12.7 million
  2. Captain Phillips – $8.5 million
  3. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 – $3.5 million
  4. Machete Kills – $1.4 million
  5. Runner Runner – $1.1 million
  6. Prisoners – $1 million
  7. Insidious: Chapter 2 – $800,000
  8. Don Jon – $758,000
  9. Rush – $714,000
  10. Baggage Claim – $575,000
