Friday Box Office: ‘Butler’ Big, ‘Kick-Ass’ Doesn’t, ‘Jobs’ Loss and ‘Paranoia’ Absent

Brief little update as Friday box office numbers are rolling in and Lee Daniels’ The Butler is off to a great start with an estimated $8.3 million, which could translate to nearly $25 million for the weekend. Solid receipts will certainly help keep the film in the awards conversation longer than had audiences shown no interest. Of course, the film had award prospects without big box office, but Weinstein and all involved have to to like what they’re seeing.

Elsewhere things aren’t as rosy as Kick-Ass 2 opened below the 2010 original with $5.8 million, Jobs brought in $2.6m and Paranoia is scratching and clawing to stay in the top ten with $1.3m, barely edging out The Wolverine at $1.28m.

When it comes to the predictions that were placed for the weekend, readers and Laremy went with Kick-Ass 2 at #1 and The Butler in second. Here’s a recap of those predictions versus how it looks like things will turn out.
