Tom Hanks and Ron Howard Reunite for Adaptation of Dan Brown’s ‘Inferno’

It was first reported Columbia Pictures had set a December 18, 2015 release date for an adaptation of Dan Brown‘s Inferno, his latest Robert Langdon story, but there was no word on who would star and direct.

Previously Tom Hanks had starred as the Harvard symbologist in the Ron Howard-directed The Da Vinci Code (2006) and Angels & Demons (2009), but when The Lost Symbol, was going to be directed by Mark Romanek after Howard opted not to return with no word on whether Hanks would stick with the character.

Now, however, The Lost Symbol has been pushed to the side and Hanks and Howard are getting back together for Inferno. Here’s the synopsis for the book:

In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces… Dante’s Inferno.

Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust… before the world is irrevocably altered.

David Koepp, who wrote the screenplay for Angels & Demons, will adapt the story.
