Where Did You See Most of Your Favorite Movies the First Time? In Theater or At Home?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. So many of my favorite movies are films I saw at home on DVD and/or Blu-ray and not in the theater. We talk about the exalted theater experience a lot and there is no doubt seeing a movie in a theater is a better experience, but is that where we end up seeing most of our favorite films?

Obviously some of my more recent favorites from Pulp Fiction, Se7en, In Bruges (which I caught the tail end of just last night on HBO), The Matrix, The Dark Knight, Before Sunset and Collateral I’ve seen on the big screen. It’s only natural movie lovers will see current favorites on the big screen a lot of the time, but there are several others where DVD and Blu-ray are the only option.

Films such as The Night of the Hunter, The Battle of Algiers, The Seventh Seal and 12 Angry Men, Sweet Smell of Success are films I own and have watched several times on Blu-ray, but never in the theater. I have, however, managed to catch the likes of Breathless and Amarcord on the big screen and wish I made a greater effort here in Seattle when some of the classics arrive in town, but even still, it seems to me more and more of my favorite films are films I’ve only experienced at home. Not that this is a bad thing, but it is something I hope to one day remedy.

How about you? And what are the films?
