‘Lone Ranger’ Opens to Miserable $10 Million While ‘Despicable Me 2’ Looks Impeccable

Wow, wow, wow. Early Wednesday estimates for Disney’s Johnny Depp starrer The Lone Ranger are miserable, bringing in only $10 million from 3,904 theaters, a disastrous opening for a film budgeted around $215–250 million. By comparison, Universal’s Despicable Me 2 is looking at a $35 million start from 3,957 theaters on a $76 million budget. Hell, even Kevin Hart‘s concert doc Let Me Explain is looking at an estimated $5 million on Wednesday from only 876 theaters. I gotta say, Hart is hot right now and this latest release is just further proof.

Now Disney has to wonder if Lone Ranger can crack $60 million for the five-day, July 4 holiday while Despicable Me 2 will easily clear $100 million. Considering films are working in a global marketplace the fact Westerns aren’t exactly big sellers worldwide will also have an effect on Lone Ranger‘s overall haul, while Despicable Me 2 already snagged $50 million from UK-Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, French-speaking Switzerland, Sweden and Australia.
