New UK Poster for ‘Heaven’s Gate’ Re-Release

On August 2, Michael Cimino‘s Heaven’s Gate will be re-released in UK theaters and today a new poster for said re-release has been issued, focusing on the epic scope of the film’s narrative and the beauty of Vilmos Zsigmond‘s cinematography.

I wrote about the film right here).

Why is this a big deal? Well, as I wrote before, the film’s legacy is unparalleled in this industry, marring the career of its director, credited with pushing United Artists into the hands of MGM and, fairly or unfairly, signalling the end of what is looked at as being the greatest decade of filmmaking in the history of Hollywood.

I’m not sure if the film will be getting a U.S. re-release (I don’t believe it is), but like I said, this new restoration is available on Criterion right now, but also, don’t let the image above fool you. The film’s imagery isn’t that bright and lustrous, for the most part it’s more along the lines of the dust in the image, with a more aged look to it, drenched in golden sunlight and shadows. As for the film, it’s got its share of problems, but its size, scope and history make it an intriguing fascination you owe it to yourself to look into further. [Empire]
