What I Watched, What You Watched #190

It has been a busy week for me, not necessarily in terms of movie watching, but just in general. I have spent the last week-and-a-half moving into a new place and if you were wondering why I didn’t post anything after noon on Friday, it’s because I spent the rest of Friday and all of Saturday moving, but things should be back to normal ’round these parts now and I’ll try and post a few additional items to make up for news lost…

First, however, let’s share our viewing habits over the last seven days.

For me it was Pain & Gain in theaters and right here.

The last item I watched this week was the fourth episode of “Hannibal“, which I understand isn’t exactly doing all that well in the ratings, which is a bit worrisome for me, since it’s rare I get involved on a week-to-week basis with a television show, but I’ve committed myself to this one. I’ve been very impressed with the way they’ve managed to slow play Lecter’s involvement as the central killer and yet have a lot of fun with the idea of him potentially feeding human flesh to his dinner guests.

I must say, though, I am surprised at the amount of violence they show. My fiancee walked in while I was watching this week’s episode, which featured a killer’s victims’ backs flayed open to resemble wings and they weren’t shy when it came to showing all the gory details. She looks at me and says, “This is on NBC?” She didn’t even want to look.

Otherwise, as I type I have Rio Bravo playing on TCM, but I have been planning on checking out Carne’s Les Visiteurs du Soir on Hulu and I have Sidney Lumet‘s Prince of the City on its way from Netflix, which I’d had in my queue for a long time, but thanks to a reminder from Steven Santos’ two-part video essay (which I have not yet watched, but will after seeing the film), I bumped it up to #1 in my queue.

Oh, by the way, thanks to those that participated in this week’s Movie Club selection of The Outsiders, and stay tuned as I’m going to have a whole new way for the Movie Club to work in the future. Essentially I’m going to have a section on the site where you will be able to suggest movies for me to review and then fellow readers will have the opportunity to vote on those suggestions. From there it’s simple, the suggestions that get more and more votes will rise to the top and will be the films I review and we can discuss… I’ll probably get all that live once I get back from Cannes, which is when I really hope to throw a few more new features into high gear… 2013 should be a lot of fun as a result.

All that said, here’s Santos’ essay if you’re interested.
