Shane Salerno is best known as a screenwriter on films such as Armageddon, Shaft, AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem and more recently, Oliver Stone‘s Savages. This year, however, he’s gone behind the camera for the new documentary Salinger, which was recently acquired by The Weinstein Co. and will be released in theaters this September followed by a release on PBS in January 2014, which is to say, yes, this will be eligible for Best Documentary this year.
The film, as I’m sure you’ve already surmised, centers on author J.D. Salinger, the famously private literary icon and author of “Franny and Zooey”, “Nine Stories” and “The Catcher in the Rye”. Salerno is also co-authoring a biography on Salinger with David Shields, titled “The Private War of J.D. Salinger”, which will be published by Simon & Schuster and hit shelves in September.
Today The Hollywood Reporter premiered the following first poster for the film and reports the doc will include appearances by authors John Guare, Tom Wolfe, E.L. Doctorow and Gore Vidal, as well as actors Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John Cusack and Martin Sheen.
