The first of what I expect will be many quotes to come from J.J. Abrams regarding his upcoming directorial outing, Star Wars: Episode VII, has been unleashed to the Internet hordes via Empire who asked the Star Trek Into Darkness director about his plans for the latest film in the franchise and while I hope you don’t expect too much info (even if he had it), he did talk a bit about the process.
He addresses the fact they are just getting started as well as his initial impulse to turn the job down only to later circle back and get on board. Check out his comments below.
Even though I was never a Star Trek fan, I felt like there was a version of it that would make me excited, that I would think ‘that’s cool, that feels right, I actually would want to see that’.
With Star Wars… I feel like I can identify a hunger for what I would want to see again and that is an incredibly exciting place to begin a project. The movies, the worlds could not be more different but that feeling that there’s something amazing here is the thing that they share.
My knee-jerk reaction was that I’m in the middle of working on the Star Trek movie and I can’t even consider it. But then time went by and I got further along working on the movie and getting to a place where I had done most of the heavy lifting. So when I met with Kathy Kennedy we just started discussing it and I was able to actually engage in the conversation.
I will say that Steven [Spielberg] was very encouraging of Star Wars. Its funny because I talked to him about it and it turned out he knew all about what was going on.
Of course Steven Spielberg knew what was up, I just hope he doesn’t get involved. The last thing I need is Joey the War Horse trotting around in space and the threat of him being sold at auction one more time. Please sir, a penny for my horse. No! Rules are rules kid, the horse is now a member of the Dark Side! Nooooooo!
