This doesn’t make any sense, but I guess it means my first day at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival won’t involve seeing a film as it has been announced Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby will open the 66th Festival de Cannes despite the fact it opens five days earlier in the U.S. If you can explain that one to me, be my guest.
I guess, since it opens in France the same day as opening night is the reasoning for the decision, but the fact it will already be in U.S. theaters seems to lessen the impact in my opinion.
Of course, the film won’t be playing in competition so it hardly matters and is merely a case of getting stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher and Joel Edgerton on the red carpet. The Hollywood Reporter also notes rapper Jay-Z and Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan also will also attend the premiere.
Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! opened the festival in 2009 and his debut feature, Strictly Ballroom, was a part of the Un Certain Regard selection in 1992.
