I get the impression most expect Wally Pfister will share some sort of connection with Christopher Nolan, with whom he served as director of photography on Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. Considering Pfister’s first outing as a feature director is a sci-fi film involving a scientist (Johnny Depp) whose brain is uploaded into the supercomputer he created with the intent on having it think for itself, there is a suggestion they, at least, share the same interests.
Then again, this could also become something of a Johnny Mneumonic 2 (remember Robert Longo?) and Pfister could be laughed out the building. I think we are all hoping (and expecting) something different, but will expectations be too high? Ironically enough, I asked the same of Inception back in 2010.
The film I’m referring to is Transcendence and Depp will co-star alongside Paul Bettany and now Deadline reveals Warner Bros. has set an April 25, 2014 release for the upcoming film that will have movie bloggers doing everything they can to learn as much as possible, though it seems this one will be as closely guarded as most of Nolan’s films if not on a J.J. Abrams level of secrecy.
Back in December, Emily Blunt, Rebecca Hall and Rooney Mara were said to be up for the role of Johnny Depp’s wife in the film, but a decision has not yet been announced.
The April 25 date was once occupied by Steven Spielberg‘s Robopocalypse, which has been placed on hold. Releasing a 11 days earlier is Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 14.
