Oscar Predictions: Updated Sound Categories Following CAS and MPSE Awards

Over the weekend the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) announced their sound mixing awards while on Sunday night the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) announced theirs for editing and the results add a little guidance to a race that’s never easy to predict.

At the 2013 CAS Awards it was Les Miserables winning in the live action category while Brave, which is looking more and more like the Best Animated winner, won in the animated category.

When it comes to predictions in the Best Sound Mixing category I previously had Skyfall on top and I still wouldn’t be surprised to see it win, just the same as I wouldn’t be surprised to see Life of Pi take it, but considering the big push for Les Miserables and the “singing live on set” aspect they’ve been pushing since before the film was even released, it makes sense it would take home the Oscar. You can see my ranked Best Sound Mixing predictions right here.

At the 2013 MPSE Awards it was Life of Pi winning big, taking home two awards, leaving the two others for Les Miserables and Skyfall.

I previously had Pi at #1 in the Best Sound Editing category at the Oscars so that hasn’t changed, all that’s really changed is moving Skyfall into the #2 slot over Django Unchained. You can see those full, ranked predictions right here.

I have included the winners in each category from each show directly below. Tomorrow night we will have winners from the Costume Designers Guild, which should continue to put these predictions into perspective as Oscar balloting also closes tomorrow night, February 19, at 5 PM PST.

The Oscars are this Sunday, February 24 and we will be live-blogging the entire night with live, up-to-date winners and commentary. We hope you’ll join us for the festivities.
