Above is the first look at Charlotte Gainsbourg in Lars von Trier‘s new movie Nymphomaniac, in which she plays Joe, and based on the synopsis this would seem to be a shot from very early in the film.
Nymphomaniac is the wild and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg). On a cold winter’s evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.
Of course, the big story with Nymphomaniac is that it will be an explicit, NC-17 film with graphic sex scenes. Von Trier has said he will be cutting both a circumcised, R-rated and NC-17 version, but certainly cinephiles will be drawn to the uncut version, if only to search for reasons why it may or may not be appropriate.
Along with Gainsbourg and Skarsgard, the film co-stars Stacy Martin (as young Joe), Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Jens Albinus, Severin von Hoensbroech, Peter Gilberg Cotton, Nicolas Bro, Tabea Tarbiat, Janine Romanowski, Jesper Christensen, Tania Carlin, Felicity Gilbert and Shanti Roney.
Expectation is that the film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, despite von Trier being deemed persona non grata after comments he made back in 2011 following the Cannes premiere of Melancholia. Who’s to tell if the fest will lift the ban, but it would certainly make for a story.
