Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master) has been looking to put together a filmed adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Inherent Vice” for some time and back in September 2012 rumor had Robert Downey Jr. stepping in to star as 1960s stoner P.I. Larry “Doc” Sportello who is hired by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. Seems today Anderson has found himself a muse.
Word is Anderson is prepared to reteam with his Master star, as Variety reports Joaquin Phoenix is expected to step into the shoes of Sportello for Inherent Vice, though a start date has not yet been announced.
Variety‘s Justin Kroll says the film will be a black comedy, which matches up with what Anderson told Empire a while back, saying, “[It’s] like a Cheech and Chong movie, [adapting it is] just gonna be great and, hopefully, fun… I’d like to have a few years of being more productive. But we’ll see… There’s so much. But it’s fun too, be because they’re his words, and… it’s like taking your dad’s car for a ride, y’know?”
