Universal has just announced they will be releasing the long-gestating Jurassic Park IV on June 13, 2014 with Steven Spielberg producing. The film will be shot in native 3-D and while a director has yet to be announced, Deadline confirms the film will use the latest script from Rise of the Planet of the Apes scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes)
The news comes only a day after Spielberg’s Robopocalypse was put on hold. Spielberg told EW, “We found [Robopocalypse] was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally…. I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.”
As I said, no director is attached to Jurassic Park 4, and Spielberg is only attached as producer for the moment, but he has been involved every step of the way, including meeting with screenwriter Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) about writing draft prior to Jaffa and Silver coming on.
It’s entirely possible Spielberg could return to the Jurassic Park franchise, but for now it’s left up in the air.
Universal will also be re-releasing Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park in 3-D later this year on April 5.
