The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) — an organization of which I am a member — held the 2013 Critics’ Choice Awards tonight and while I wasn’t able to be in attendance, I voted on these awards so I had some measure of a vested interest in how they turned out.
Ben Affleck may have been snubbed for Best Director at the Oscar nominations this morning, but he took home Best Director at the Critic’s Choice Awards and saw Argo win Best Picture. I wasn’t able to be in attendance, but folks on Twitter relayed his Best Director acceptance speech where he said, “I would like to thank the Academy… I’m kidding, I’m kidding this is the one that counts.”
Director and Picture would be the only two awards Argo would take home while Silver Linings Playbook was the leading winner with four, three of which came from the comedy categories where it won Best Comedy, Actor (Bradley Cooper) and Actress (Jennifer Lawrence). The David O. Russell-directed feature also won Best Ensemble.
Jennifer Lawrence was a dual winner tonight, combining her Best Actress in a Comedy win with a Best Actress in an Action Movie win for her part in The Hunger Games. Skyfall took advantage of the Action category as well where Daniel Craig won for Best Actor and the film won Best Action Film, topping Looper, which would eventually win Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film.
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) won Best Actress, Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) won for Best Actor and in the Supporting categories Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) were the winners.
I have already updated the Oscar Overture with the win for Argo as we are now knee deep in this race and if you check out the upcoming Awards Schedule it isn’t slowing down from here.
We will be back her Sunday night with a Live Blog of the 2013 Golden Globes so be sure to join us for that. Until then, I have listed both the winners and nominees below and highlighted the winners in bold red text. I have also placed a
next to the nominees I voted for in each category. I hope that’s not too confusing…
