Frozen

Disney Animation is on a role with Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph and next up is Frozen, a film that sounds as if it is right down the Disney alley. Here’s the synopsis:
When Anna is cursed by her estranged sister, the cold-hearted Snow Queen, Anna’s only hope of reversing the curse is to survive a perilous but thrilling journey across an icy and unforgiving landscape. Joined by a rugged, thrill-seeking outdoorsman, his one-antlered reindeer and a hapless snowman, Anna must race against time, conquer the elements and battle an army of menacing snowmen if she ever hopes to melt her frozen heart.
Is it possible Disney could take over the animated mantle from Pixar if this trend continues? After all, I’m looking forward to Frozen while Monsters University doesn’t exactly scream “See me!”

Elysium

I have five all-out sci-fi films on my list of Top 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013 and here comes number two. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 was decent. I didn’t buy into it the same as everyone else, but that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize the potential and it seems as if we’ve been waiting forever for Elysium to arrive.
Set in 2159 and starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, the film will have a bit of a problem getting over its Astro Boy plot line in that it takes place aboard a space station called Elysium and the ruined Earth below. Two classes of people exist in this scenario, the rich are up in space while the rest of the population is living down below and Secretary Delacourt (Foster) is hoping to keep it that way, but I think we all know that just can’t be.
We’re still waiting on a trailer for this one as it recently shifted release dates from March 2013 to August so we may be waiting a little longer.

Out of the Furnace

Scott Cooper‘s sophomore effort following 2009’s Crazy Heart is the star packed Out of the Furnace with the likes of Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepard. The story follows two brothers (Bale and Affleck) who live in the economically-depressed Rust Belt, when a cruel twist of fate lands one of them in prison, the other is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast.
The draw here, for me, is the talent involved, but I am curious in which what time period will the film be set? I always do my best not to know too much information about a film before going in and at this point I’m content in not knowing. Relativity Media of all studios is handling the distribution of this pic and at this point I wouldn’t be surprised to see it make a Toronto 2013 debut.

Only Lovers Left Alive

I have not yet explored all of Jim Jarmusch’s earlier work, but without question the earlier films of his I’ve seen — Down by Law and Mystery Train — are far better than the films I’ve seen from him since.
Only Lovers Left Alive is his first film in four years following the lackluster Limits of Control and it’s got a story that I can’t help but be intrigued by that taps into Jarmusch’s love of music but has a vampiric twist to it.
The story follows Adam (Tom Hiddleston), an underground musician reunites with his centuries-old lover (Tilda Swinton) after he becomes depressed and tired with the direction human society has taken. Their love is interrupted and tested by her wild and uncontrollable little sister (Mia Wasikowska).
The love for vampire stories as of late has certainly gotten a bit old, but I don’t expect this film to be anything like those we’ve seen. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if not a single drop of blood was spilled in the entire movie.
